It Is Well With My Soul

He was a well known Christian man,
Lived  over a hundred years ago.
Though some may not know his name,
His music they may know.

He lived a happy, prosperous life,
Four daughters he did sire.
All things were going well for him,
Until the "Chicago Fire".

Much of the business he had was lost,
And after speculation,
Decided to take his girls abroad,
To get their education.

A last minute circumstance,
Caused him not to go.
His wife would journey with the girls,
And courage they did show.

The day they sailed and said goodbye,
He promised to join them soon.
There was no way that he could know,
That disaster did loom.

In mid-ocean two ships collided,
One was the Villa de Havre.
All that was left of the remains,
Was at the bottom of the sea.

From his wife he received a note,
"Saved, alone" is all it said.
Darkness and despair overcame him,
As these words he read.

Through clouds of darkness came a light,
It came from God above.
The bright light of God's promises,
Filled with comfort and love.

No matter what the circumstance,
Whether sorrows or peace,
God will never forsake us and,
His love will never cease.

With these true thoughts in mind he wrote,
The words to a song of old.
With heart filled with sorrow he penned,
"It Is Well With My Soul".
